NEXT STEPS:
In future years our garden can be added to. As of right now we do not have all the plants that we planned for so over the years we can add to the overall idea. So later classes can take the original design and add to it with their own change. By the end we would have a garden that resembled the original design but has something special from each class that contributed. For example, every year a class/group could add their own stone to the pathway. The slow addition of more and more plants would also increase plant to animal interactions.
Another idea to have other classes contribute to the garden would be every year as a class a bench is added with a saying that is special to that class. Again we could also have every year a class add a stepping stone with their graduating year on it. When it is full you could see how the stones changed every year.
Another project for next classes would be building a fence. Deer are definitely a big problem for this garden. My group specifically chose mostly deer resistant plants. Most likely without a fence the deer will eat all the flowers of our garden, changing the entire look drastically. Next year/class would be best to build a fence around the entire garden which could also be a task for the freshmen engineering class. It could be a project to build the most sturdy and aesthetically pleasing fence and the best one would be then all built by that class.
In the future I feel that it would be better to start this project earlier in the year. Planting right now leaves a small chance of the plants actually surviving. As a smaller side project the class could start learning about gardening and building their ideas for the garden so that by the time of early spring everything would be prepared to start planting. This would also give time to actually amend the soil properly.
